"Daddy, look at this one!"
Every window they came to, the small, blond girl was pressed to the glass, staring at the feminine manikins in their dresses and fancy clothing. Expensive clothing. Nothing that Kaizer could afford without a few months worth of savings. He kept having to explain to Sparrow that she was too small to fit into those dresses. They were for grown up women, not young ladies like her. But he promised her, one day, she'd fit them all perfectly too.
The man's fingers were laced with the child's, their arms swinging back and forth between them as Kaizer let his other hand keep a tight grip on the bag he had slung over his shoulder. They were supposed to be grocery shopping, but all Sparrow was interested in was pretty clothes and dolls. They didn't have the money for those!
Kaizer grabbed at her elbow, pulling her off to the side. He tried to sit her down on the nearest bench and pressed a finger to his lips, a signal for her to be quiet for now. "Sparrow, baby, I know you're excited. But we're looking for food," Kaizer reminded her. But the girl's smile seemed to fall at that. He hated to make her sad. He knew she was just having fun. But neither of them had eaten yet today. He was only thinking about her health. They needed to get food to fill her stomach- and maybe his own, if he was lucky.

He also usually winds up buying some sort of sweet for the French fellow and he can only hope he appreciates them because Séverin sure doesn't see the appeal of sugar. ...Except for cake pops, but that's a different story altogether. As he strolls past the women's clothing, Séverin catches the sight of a little girl with even tinier hands than his petité Lune! What a sight. She looks rather disappointed and while Séverin is no particular patron of children, he can't help but feel a small jab of sympathy in his melting heart. So, he decides to try being kind for once. Maybe Lune will reward him with cuddles. That would be nice.
"Pardon me, sir," he starts, tapping the gent on the shoulder. "Didn't mean to eavesdrop, but I heard you're looking for food?" Good Lord. How do you be nice to somebody? Arceus, help him.

Did his mother teach him nothing while he was growing up? It was only common respect. Kaizer didn't want to spend his time in public, scared that everyone was listening in on his conversations. That's why, when the boy turned to the stranger, his eyes were narrowed in a bit of suspicious and annoyance. "Clearly. Why else would my daughter and I be in the market if it weren't for grocery shopping?" Not that they had a great deal of money to put into their dinners. But he spoke with malice in his voice, almost talking to this grown man as if he were an idiot child. Not that all children were idiots. Oh, no, his baby girl was the smartest of her age, he insisted.
"You wanna get food with us?!" Stranger danger, Kaizer had always told the girl. Yet it was Sparrow's voice that chirped as she held tight to the back of her daddy's jeans, her head beside his hip as she stared up at this new man with a bright and excited smile. Her daddy was here, so she didn't need to be afraid of strangers. As long as she didn't leave her daddy's side. [/style] |

It was a dumb idea to begin with. Complete and total poppycock. God, what was Séverin even thinking? Trying to be nice to a complete stranger? Yeah, maybe if he was high. Which he wasn't. He swears he isn't, but the small child beside the young man pipes up with a bright smile that reminds him of his own Lune and he cracks just a little. It's a good thing he didn't just walk away altogether with some snide remark. Let this be a lesson of reciprocated kindness to Séverin. He smiles tentatively at the small girl, slightly nervous. "I don't think your father would be all too thrilled at the idea of me joining you. I'm sorry."

One of her hands still had fingers laced with her fathers, but the other hand reached out now to grab the stranger's wrist. But her fingers weren't nearly long enough to wrap around it. She was too young and tiny. "Daddy's just angry 'cause he's hungry," Sparrow giggled, as if she knew all the answers and her daddy like the back of her little hands. But it was true. Kaizer hadn't eaten today. He'd given the last bowl of cereal to his baby girl.
Kaizer had grown a little frustrated already, wishing his child wasn't so friendly with men she'd never even seen before. She was always friendly to the men! He could only guess how she'd turn out as a teenager. He didn't like to trust someone he only just met. But, he had to admit, they could use an extra pair of hands. But why would he put that burden on a stranger? He took a shaky breath and quickly shook his head. "N-no, Sparrow... don't bother the man. He's probably here doing his shopping too," Kaizer explained to the young one. She didn't understand yet that the world didn't revolve around her and that people couldn't always stop what they were doing for her. It didn't work that way. [/style] |
