IT'S ALL HAPPENING AGAIN LIKE BEFORE The bench was just down the path from the small pet store, and it was Sterling that occupied it. His legs rested sprawled out in front of him, arms crossed comfortably behind his head, as a nicely wrapped box sat in his lap. It was covered in blue paper, with a nice green bow on the top. A gift, of course! For that gijinka he could call his own.
Too bad the boy was at work. And too bad that Sterling had forgot to ask him when he'd get off. It was nearing five in the afternoon and Sterling still sat on the benched. He'd arrived an entire hour prior and still hadn't seen any sign of that fluffy tailed raccoon ferret- or whatever he was. But Sterling waited, nonetheless. He sure need the fresh air, as well as the relaxation time.

Once the clock hit five, Dustin was out the door. Giving a gentle goodbie to his coworkers, the gikinka headed out to the street in his usual rags - this meant his too large hoodie. The hood, as per always, was tugged over his ears and he even attempted to stuff his tail up the back.. but a few flicks and it was free. Gosh darn it. Such a pesky part of his anatomy that the child wanted desperately to hid. So focused on trying to contain his tail, Dustin almost passed right by Sterling. It was only the faint sight of that fluffed green hair that made the furret skid to a stop. "sterling..?". The voice came out soft, but the blue eyes were filled with louder questions. What was he doing here? Was he okay? Did something happen? was he in trouble? Instead of voicing this though, the boy just stepped closer, nervously playing with the sleeves of his hoodie.

IT'S ALL HAPPENING AGAIN LIKE BEFORE About time! Just when Sterling felt he should give up on waiting- maybe Dustin didn't even work today- the kid decided to show himself. Dustin almost walked right past him, but Sterling was on his feet, stepping toward him with a smile and already holding out the gift wrapped box to the child. "Dust! Here, I bought these for you. Wish I could say I made them, but... you know I can't cook," the officer pointed out, a fact that everyone knew. The kitchen would catch fire every time that Sterling went into it.
"They're sugar cookies. Remember, like I always use to give you before? I know, it's been awhile, but I felt that you needed them. You've been working so much lately, and I thought that they'd be a nice gift," Sterling stopped there, silent after repeating the little speech he'd been rehearsing all day. That was it though. That was all he'd thought up to say the child. Was it good enough? Would Dustin be happy with what he'd done for him? He was trying to be the good trainer.

He didn't like to complain about work. How tiring it was. How messy the animals were, how much it hurt to see his favourite animals go. He hated to whine about it, instead he just kept those thoughts to himself and smiled at work. Laughed at jokes, at rude customers. A highlight was seeing his trainer. Though the man was gruff at times, he was also gentle. Without Dustin having to say the words, he cheered the boy up. The word sugar cookie barely passed the man's lips before the boy threw his arms around the other. Due to the large gap in high, it was easy for him to tuck his head under the other's chin. To gently sigh, nuzzle at the collar of the man's shirt. He loved his trainer. They had a rough start, as anyone. But headstrong, stubborn and hot tempered.. but eventually, their walls crumbled. Bickers turned to smiles and and cold shoulders slowly became affectionate hugs. Such as the one happening. Hugging himself tight to the other's body, Dustin sighed and relaxed himself. "Thank you.. I missed them so much! ..any special reason..?". He pulled away now, curious eyes staring up at the man. Did something happen?

IT'S ALL HAPPENING AGAIN LIKE BEFORE Sterling's arms had lifted, to avoided accidentally smacking the child in the face when he came toward him with open arms. The man's face brightened, a twinkling in his eyes as he lowered his arms on Dustin's shoulders, and moved his head down low enough that he could kiss those blond locks of hair. It seemed like cookies had been the good choice. It was thanks to cookies like these, always bought from the best bakeries and shaped like the cutest pokemon, that the two could even be close at all. It was through lots of baked goods bribing that Sterling got Dustin close to him.
"There's no special occasion. I thought you'd like them. Like I said, you've been working a lot, haven't you?" the man pointed out, his shoulders shrugging back. Then again, Sterling probably worked more than Dustin did. The man was always on call, quick to reach the scene if ever there was an emergency. "I doubt you've eaten today. Have you? That's another reason to stuff your belly with cookies." His eyes rolled, a hand poking the child's clothed stomach for emphasis. Unlike Sterling, Dustin was small and skinny. He needed more meat on those bones.

Squirming away from the touch, the boy took a few steps back and stared up at the other. Letting the hood finally fall back, his perked ears were exposed. Reaching out, he accepted the box and hugged it to his chest. Dustin certainly was smaller than the other, but he never made an attempt to eat more than needed. A meal or two a day, that was it. Perhaps it wasn't enough, but it was for the boy. It wasn't uncommon that he'd even give his meals to Sterling. Taking a breath, the boy hesitated before tugging up the hood again. He pulled it over his face silently before resting his forehead to the other's chest. A weak sigh was uttered, the boy mumbled still. ".. I didn't think you noticed. I have been, i've been trying really really hard! .. cause you're always working hard. With work and all and I..". He finally stopped. Taking a breath, the boy just stared at him and slowly shook his head, trying to force up a smile. " .. Thanks for the gift. I'll keep working hard, if it means more .. good moods from you!".

IT'S ALL HAPPENING AGAIN LIKE BEFORE It took every ounce of Sterling's effort to not reach out and scratch between those cute and furry ears. The kid wasn't a dog. He wasn't full Pokémon. Sterling shouldn't be treating him like one. But, when someone had fluffy ears and a tail, could a person really resist that urge to cuddle, squeeze and pet? Sterling's hands were by his sides, where they wouldn't get in the way and make anyone uncomfortable. Just where they belonged.
The officer scoffed and turned his head away, thumbs hooking into the pockets of his baggy jeans. "You're trying to say that I'm not always in a good mood around you? Just don't overwork yourself. You'll end up sick. I'll have to sit by your bedside, force feeding you burnt soup," Sterling explained the awful fantasy- that would become reality if Dustin kept up all of his working! If anyone was going to burn soup, it was Sterling. Burnt chicken, shrivelled noodles and evaporated broth. Mmmmm.

"You mean feed me poison?". A small face was made, only a playful one though. Dustin never meant to mistreat the other, but sometimes his words were more cruel than he intended. Trying to soften the sharpness of the words, he offered a nervous smile, before simply eyeing down at the box. Carefully holding it in one arm, he toyed with the wrapping a bit. It took a few moments but soon he carefully unwrapped a side and nudged open the top. With a light smile, a cookie was tugged out and nibbled on. While the boy wasn't too fond of simple plain vanilla, he very much loved sugar cookies. He found they were the most delicious - he just was a sucker for anything sweet though. After putting the faintly nibbled treat away, he gave the other a light smile still. Watching the other. "I watched my health! It would be a waste if I got sick.. who would be there to protect you!". He laughed this, knowing that he was no doubt the last person to be thought of as a 'protector'. He was tough though! Small and tough.

IT'S ALL HAPPENING AGAIN LIKE BEFORE So, maybe Sterling knew his food wasn't that great. But he refused to admit that it might kill someone! It was still food. It was just charred black, inside and out, and lacked any taste of what it use to be before he set it on fire. His baking was just in bad. These cookies were bought from a small bakery over on the corner. He'd specially ordered sugar cookies to be in the shapes of hearts and stars, all for Dustin. Cute boys liked hearts and stars, right? Or maybe that was girls. Dustin was more or less a girl, in Sterling's eyes.
Sterling was taken aback as he reached out and swatted Sterling's ears, playfully, as he yanked the hand back and pouted. "Excuse me, young man? It's my knuckles that bruise and bleed from all this protection going on, not yours! When was the last time you attacked anyone for me?" the officer sneered, arms dropping over his chest and crossing firm and tight in front of him. He'd hate to put Dustin in danger. That was why he did all of the fighting instead of the Pokemon. Despite how it was supposed to be the other way around. Why did it matter? Sterling was going to feel the pain no matter who took the hit and delivered the blow.

There was a faint flinch from the boy, but he tries not to expose it to the other. Dustin hated talking about fights - what a useless pokemon he was. They fought about it often. How Dustin felt useless, how he needed a BETTER pokemon. Sterling would always shout at him. He didn't want anyone else. Just watching the man for a few moments, he shook his head and turned away from the other, huffing lightly. ".. well! one day.. i'ma evolve you know! and i'll be protecting you from everyone. You won't even get a papercut!". He laughed these words, but was serious. Dustin hated every time the man for hurt, even from himself. Carefully holding the box, the boy took the other's hand and squeezed it, staring at him. "I mean it you know! I will promise to keep you safe.. Cause that's my job. ". As much as Dustin said this, he felt his own words were true though. He loved the man, deeply. His trainer was everything to him - wasn't it that way for everyone? He fell silent now, holding his hand before slowly letting go and stepping away from him and pushing down one of his own ears with a sigh - protecting them from the other! "You are so mean to my ears..".

IT'S ALL HAPPENING AGAIN LIKE BEFORE "Into, what was it again... a Furret? Because everyone's gonna be scared of a big, nasty ferret. With a big puff tail, big cute eyes and those furry little ears," Sterling teased, snorting as he whipped his head around. Dustin evolving wouldn't change a thing, would it? He'd still be small, blond and cute. He'd still be a pacifist, a shy kid, and always a cutie. It wouldn't change. They both knew it. Sterling didn't want Dustin to change. He was just fine the way he was now.
Once again, Sterling had reached out. It wasn't to abuse Dustin's ears this time though. Instead, his fingers brushed through those blond locks, resting atop the kid's head. His finger started to scratch and rub gently at the back of Dustin's furry little ear though. "Dust, please. It's my job to keep you safe. And everyone safe. I'm the police officer. And you're... my partner." Maybe Dustin didn't fight crime alongside Sterling, but they were together till the end. The name carved into each of their wrists was a sure sign of that.

A bright red spread across the boy's face at the other's mocking, before he smacked his trainer's shoulder and huffed at the older man. "Hye! I totally will be! My ears won't be cute at ALL and i'll beat down everyone who wants to be mean to you! ..cause i'm suppose to..". His voice grew softer as the fingers went through his hair. Dustin loved pets, he hated to admit it, but it was painfully obvious as he leaned into Sterling's hand. He had the best trainer, Dustin knew that for a fact. No one else could be this kind, this gentle. It made the boy feel even more guilty. That he wasn't fighting along side him. Being a crime stopping pair. He was too small, too weak. Too dumb.. The thoughts clouded his head and as he felt the fingers against his ear, a light sigh escaped. Moving closer, Dustin easily tucked his head under the other's chin and nosed at his collarbone lightly. "One day I wanna fight crime with you! Then we can always be together, right?". Such a childish thought. It helped to prove the boy got lonely.

IT'S ALL HAPPENING AGAIN LIKE BEFORE As long as Dustin had furry ears on top of his head, no matter what they looked like, Sterling would find them adorable. He'd pull them, swat them, pet them, and even kiss them. Maybe it was a little weird, but Sterling found himself oddly attracted to those ears. Even if they weren't puppy ears, he thought they suited the cute child. "Mean to me? Dustin, who in this city is mean to me? I'm the police man, they're all too scared of me," he winked, his fingers still lost in that mess of blond hair, tangling and toying with each strand.
"You're sure about that? I wouldn't mind having a partner, especially a gijinka like yourself. But it's a dangerous job. You've seen that yourself." On several accounts, Sterling had come to see him while he was injured. Or Dustin would have to visit him in the hospital due to some wounds he was quite proud of. Some by bullets, and other by knives. He preferred to fight human criminal scum over the gijinkas. At least against humans, he stood a chance. He couldn't shoot fireballs out of his mouth like some people could. Instinctively, Sterling's arms had wrapped protectively around the small boy, having left his ears. Instead, his nose nuzzled into that mop, pressing a little kiss to his head.

"I.. mean it.. Really! ". He sighed a bit, still keeping his face hidden against the other's chest. It felt wonderful, those sweet kisses. Sterling was far too gentle for him. Squirming a bit, Dustin peeked up at the other, a weak frown. "especially someone like me? I thought I was weak!". He argued this lightly, before reaching down and slowly lacing his fingers around the man's wrist. Dustin wanted to work with the man. He wasn't as strong, and he certainly wasn't as brave, but it didn't mean he wouldn't try. When on his own, Dustin cowered - but when Sterling was involved, Dustin went for the throat. Sterling was his trainer, her friend, and frankly the only family he had left. Giving a weak sigh, he kissed the other's jaw lightly, a nervous smile. "..Sorry. That was a thank you! ..for saying you think i'm good enough to work with you. I wouldn't mind. I like the pet shop! But if anything ever happened to you I- .. I want ot be there. I can't lose you! I'd never forgive ..the world.."

It caught Sterling off guard when those small and soft lips pressed to his jaw. His skin tingled where they'd touched, but he kept the red heat away from his face. Instead, his gaze dropped, a pair of green-blue eyes fixed on the child with a curiosity twinkling in them. He supposed he could accept this reasoning for why the child had given such affection. He'd never gone that far before. But what was Sterling thinking? It was just a kiss on the skin! Not the lips, and not even the cheek. "Just think, Dustin. We're connected. If I get hurt, then I get hurt. If you get hurt? I still get hurt. If I'm going to get hurt either way, I at least want to choose the way where you're safe." He only got one Gijinka. He wasn't going to lose him.
The man's fingers curled, gently cupping his cheek and holding his face, so that he couldn't look away. His lips missed Dustin's hair this time. It was on purpose, but he brushed them against Dustin's forehead this time, holding the kiss there until he whispered against his skin, "You're off now, aren't you? We can go out. Walk, eat... you can come to my place. Or maybe I can go to yours." They were all just suggestions. Sterling had successfully brought the cookies, but he came to him intending to do more. He wanted more time with Dustin. But how often was it that they both had the same time off?
